First Aid Posts at Four Roman Basilicas

At the invitation of H.E. The Grand Hospitaller, the Maltese Association was invited to participate in the manning of the First Aid Posts at the four major Roman basilicas during the year of the Jubilee of Hope, taking place in Rome during 2025.

A strong contingent of 38 persons, mostly Members of the Order but also including medical doctors, nurses and volunteers, have just returned from a week of service in Rome.  There they worked in teams led by a doctor and a nurse, providing first aid to pilgrims visiting the four Papal Basilicas during this Holy Year.

Service was given at the Vatican, the Basilica of Saint John Lateran, the Basilica of Saint Mary Major and the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls.

Medical Doctors leading the teams were Dr. Bernard Coleiro,  Dr. David Cassar, Dr Louis Joseph (Pita) Sant Cassia, Dr. Simon Bugeja and Dr Danilo Tolomeo, while the nurses were Rachel Barthet, Anna Brancaleone, Carmen Attard, and Bernadette Mangion.

The Council was led by the President, Dr Michael Grech, the Vice President, Dame Helene Zammit, the Secretary General. the Noble Marchesino Josef Formosa Gauci, the Hospitaller, Dame Karen Miller and the Treasurer, Mr Frederick Mifsud Bonnici.

The Principal Chaplain, The Very Reverend Monsignor Brendan Gatt was present throughout the whole week and celebrated Mass every day at the different Basilicas for the Maltese teams present.

The Volunteers were finally invited to the Magistral Villa on the Aventine, where a presentation of the Commemorative Medal of the 2025 Jubilee was presented to them by the H.E. The Grand Commander of the Order, Fra’ Emmanuel Rousseau, assisted by H.E. The Prelate of the Order, Monsignor Luis Manuel Cuna Ramos.
