Maltese Association

Order of Malta

The Sacra Militia Foundation of Malta, founded in 1998, is research body affiliated to the Maltese Association of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta. Its main aim is to carry out and publish research on the history of the Order of St John. Since 2002 it has published a number of excellent academic books on the topic besides the publication of an annual journal – Sacra Militia.

Mission Statement

The study and carrying out of research into the military, naval, Hospitaller and other aspects pertaining to the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes and of Malta from the date of its foundation up to 1798 and beyond. We do this by means of publications, the organisation of events and public lectures, and by producing objective educational materials.

Four times per year, the Sacra Militia Foundation organises a public lecture at the headquarters of the Order’s Maltese Association, Casa Lanfreducci, in Valletta, Malta, on topics of interest related to the history of the Order of Malta.

Members of the Sacra Militia Foundation make an annual contribution, currently set at €15.00, which includes a complimentary copy of the annual Journal of the Sacra Militia Foundation. Members who reside outside Malta are asked to contribute an additional € 5.00 to cover postage and packaging, while members who reside outside Europe are charged additional postage fees at cost.

Membership enquiries may be made either via our Facebook page or by email to the President of the Sacra Militia Foundation on address:

During the AGM of April 2018, a digital presentation was given of the new publication of Sacra Militia, The Struggle for Supremacy, the Mediterranean World in 1453 and Beyond. The book will be available in September/October 2018.

The present book combines the efforts of fifteen researchers whose areas of expertise bring forth various aspects of the history of the Order of St John and the times during which the Hospitallers were prominently active. This publication deals with the Hospitallers as much as it does with the societies and the powers that crossed paths periodically or continuously, such as the Ottomans. These dynamic vectors converge because of the vigorous competition between Christianity and Islam ‒ a struggle among the main powers surrounding the Mediterranean basin. Consequently, the central focus of this publication followed one of Fernand Braudel’s favourite expressions of exploring the main area of research within its general context. The basic concept of continuity and change is best explored as a consequence of the Order’s environment. To write about the ebb and flow of the Knights’ history outside of the political, economic and socio-cultural developments within the Mediterranean Region and the territories that constitute it, would simply be a futile exercise.
