Prospero Cardinal Grech 24/12/1925 – 30/12/2019

The members and volunteers of the Maltese Association were most saddened by the sudden passing away of their confrère, His Eminence Prospero Cardinal Grech, who departed this life on the 30 December 2019.

Cardinal Grech was elevated to the dignity and rank of Bailiff Grand Cross of Honour and Devotion in April 2012, barely two months after Pope Benedict XVI appointed him Cardinal. He immediately joined the Maltese Association, and participated in the Lourdes Pilgrimage every year.

The Maltese Augustinian Province, in coordination with the Archdiocese of Malta, organised a series of liturgical celebrations ahead of the Cardinal’s burial.

On Wednesday 8th January the Knight Resident at Fort St Angelo, the Council and members participated at a ceremony in Vittoriosa – the late Cardinal’s body was transported in procession from Couvre Porte to St Lawrence’s Church where prayers were said for the repose of his soul.

On Thursday 9th January the Association participated at a funeral Mass held in the Metropolitan Cathedral of St Peter and St Paul in Mdina. at 2pm.
