Tuitio Fidei et Obsequium Pauperum the Sovereign Military Order of Malta 1113 – 2013

The Hon. Evarist Bartolo, Minister of Education and Employment, officially inaugurated the exhibition ‘TUITIO FIDEI ET OBSEQUIUM PAUPERUM – the Sovereign Military Order of Malta 1113-2013’, which has been mounted by the National Library of Malta in Valletta, under the auspices of Malta Libraries, to commemorate the 900th Anniversary of the recognition of the Order Of Malta by Pope Paschal II in 1113.

The exhibition was set up in the Reading room of the National Library. Various original documents and manuscripts taken from the Order’s archives, some of which dating back to just under 1,000 years, were displayed in glass wooden showcases.

It was divided into themes starting off with the early history of the Order, continuing chronologically to the present times. The exhibition sheds light on the three phases of the Order – the epoch prior to the Knights’ arrival in Malta, their time here and the period after their departure, coming up to the present day.

The exhibition, which is free of charge, is open to the public from Monday to Friday until August 2.

Malta Libraries were loaned artifacts from Heritage Malta, Wignacourt Museum, Fort St Angelo and the Jerosolimitan Nuns of St Ursula.

Among the dignitaries were the President of Maltese Association Dr Philip Farrugia-Randon, Baron Eugenio Ajroldi di Robbiate Director of the Order of Malta’s Communications Office in Rome, H.E. Ing. Umberto Di Capua S.M.O.M. Ambassador to Malta and Dr George Buttigieg Malta Ambassador to S.M.O.M.
