Presentation on the Shelter for Homeless Youth Project

March 1 2019

On Friday 1 March 2019 Mr. Bryan Magro, President of the National Federation of Past Pupils and Friends of Don Bosco, was invited to deliver a presentation to Members and Volunteers on the Alberto Marvelli Shelter for Homeless Youth Project in Paola which the Maltese Association is undertaking in partnership with the Federation.

The event was held in the Refectory of the Archbishop’s Curia in Floriana.

Following a brief introduction by the Hospitaller, who touched upon the budget and informed those in attendance that the Shelter was earmarked for opening by June of this year, an update on the various civil works carried out on the premises, including an extension constructed in the relatively large back yard, was given by confrère Architect Dennis Kirkop; after which Mr. Magro delivered his presentation focussing mainly on the Mentoring Programme which will be a unique feature of the Project.

Various questions were raised by the audience, which served to demonstrate the keen interest which was shown on the subject.

The presentation was immediately followed by First Friday Mass in the main Chapel of the Curia, lead by the Vice-President, which elderly Members were invited to attend. The Reverend Monsignor Lawrence Gatt, Principal Chaplain of the Maltese Association, was the main celebrant, whilst Conventual Chaplain ‘ad honorem’ the Reverend Monsignor Paul Vella and Magistral Chaplain the Reverend Monsignor Victor Zammit McKeon concelebrated. Holy Mass was offered up for the repose of the soul of Mrs Mary Sammut, wife of past Member Comm. Joseph C. Sammut.

Refreshments were then served back at the Refectory, allowing for those present to interact socially and continue the earlier discussion on a more informal basis.
