Lenten Retreat 8-10 March 2024

March 10 2024

The annual Lenten live-in retreat of the Maltese Association was held at Manresa Retreat House on the outskirts of Victoria, Gozo, from Friday 8 to Sunday 10 March 2023.

The well attended retreat was held in English and was conducted by the Association’s Principal Chaplain, Mgr. Brendan Mark Gatt.

The guiding text, which formed the theme on which all four talks were centred, was “I no longer call you servants (…). Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.” (John 15:15)

The retreat commenced on Friday evening, when participants gathered at Manresa House for Holy Mass, followed by supper and the opening reflections setting the scene for the spiritual retreat.  Proceedings concluded with the praying of compline.

A Pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady Ta’ Pinu took place on Saturday morning, where Holy Mass was celebrated at 11:00.

The homily analysed the parable of the Pharisee and the publican both praying in the temple, as featured in the gospel reading of the day (Luke 18: 9-14), and how the publican who acknowledged his sin and appealed to God’s mercy was justified, whereas the Pharisee who was full of self-praise was not : “because every one that exalteth himself, shall be humbled: and he that humbleth himself, shall be exalted”. Conversion begins with the acknowledgement that we are sinners.

The Via Crucis was then held in the gardens of Manresa House later on that same afternoon, following which Mgr. Gatt and recently invested Gozitan chaplain Fr. Geoffrey Attard made themselves available to all those wishing to partake in the special sacrament of reconciliation.

Sunday 10 March marked “Laetare Sunday”. Holy Mass was celebrated in the Chapel at Manresa House at 10:45. The homily once again centred around the gospel reading, with particular reference to the well known John 3:16  – “For God so loved the world, as to give his only begotten Son; that whosoever believeth in him, may not perish, but may have life everlasting.”

The retreat came to an end after lunch on Sunday afternoon.

The President of the Maltese Association Marchesino Daniel de Petri Testaferrata, together with various members in Obedience, members – most with their spouses, aspirants and volunteers participated in this three-day religious event.
