Sacra Militia Association AGM
The Annual General Meeting of The Sacra Militia Association was held on Saturday 28th March at Casa Lanfreducci, in Valletta. This Association is considered one of the peripheral organizations of the Maltese Association of the Order of Malta.
Set up in 1998 as a Foundation, its aim is the study and research into the military, naval, Hospitaller history of the Order and has to date published a few publications as well as organized several public lectures of general interest. Since 2025, It is now registered as an Association.
The AGM was preceded by a lecture given by Dr Fleur Brincat dealing with the involvement of France in the 1761 capture of the “Corona Ottomana” a Turkish warship, brought to Malta after a slaves’ mutiny on aboard and that almost led to a Turkish invasion of Malta. The vessel was the pride of the Sultan of Turkey. France had to use its diplomatic skills to bring the matter to a peaceful end.
The President, Dr Dane Munro, gave an administrative report about the activities of the Association in the last few years, its activities having been interrupted due to Covid and the changes needed to change from a Foundation to an Association. The financial statements were tabled and approved. A new Council was approved.
The meeting also saw also the launch of the latest publication – The Art of Negotiating an Existence – edited by Dr Munro, Professor Dr George Cassar, and Dr Noel Buttigieg. The book presents twenty-two original studies showing how power, identity and community were continually negotiated across changing political and spiritual landscapes.
Dr Michael Grech, the President of the Maltese Association of the Order, in his Foreword to the publication, commended the Sacra Militia Association for “fostering dialogue between generations of scholars, ensuring that Hospitaller studies remain dynamic and relevant”
The book is available for sale at Casa Lanfreducci.
