H.E. Fra’ John Edward Critien takes Oath of Office as Grand Prior of Rome

August 28 2022

His Excellency the Venerable Bailiff Fra’ John Edward Critien today took his Oath of Office as Grand Prior of Rome – the first Maltese member of the Order to hold that Office.

H.E. Fra’ John Dunlap, Lieutenant Grand Master of the Order of Malta, received the Oath, in the presence of His Eminence Silvano Cardinal Tomasi, H.E. Archbishop Jean Laffitte, Prelate of the Order, and various members of the Order’s Government.
The Maltese Association was represented by its President, Marchesino Daniel de Petri Testaferrata, who attended the ceremony together with the Grand Prior of Naples and Sicily, the Procurator of the Grand Priory of Lombardy and Venice, and the President of the Italian Association.
The ceremony was held at the Church of Santa Maria del Priorato at Villa Malta on Rome’s Aventine Hill, and was followed by a vin d’honneur in its spectacular gardens.
Born in September 1949, Fra’ John graduated Bachelor of Arts at the Royal University of Malta, and furthered his studies at the Universities of Perugia and Pisa. He taught English language and literature in Pisa, where he lived for 22 years. He actively supported several volunteer groups of the Order of Malta in Pisa and Florence, was invited to join the Order in 1983, and took his solemn vows ten years later. In 2012 he was elevated to the dignity and rank of Bailiff of Justice.
He has served in numerous roles, notably as a member of the Sovereign Council for three terms, while carrying out many duties with the Grand Priory.
Fra’ John retains his role as Knight Resident at Fort St Angelo, President of the Foundation for the Pilgrimages of the Venerable Langue of Italy, and Curator of the Order’s art collections.
We wish Fra’ John a long and fruitful term of Office, and promise to keep him very much in our prayers.
