Votive Lamp Pilgrimage
June 6 2021
The annual Votive Lamp Pilgrimage to St. Paul’s Grotto in Rabat, led by the Association’s President Marchesino Daniel de Petri Testaferrata, was held on Sunday 6 June, which also happened to be the feast of Corpus Christi.
This is the second public activity of the Association today, only possible following the revised health guidelines regarding the pandemic.
Archpriest Louis Suban officiated the proceedings which commenced in the Sanctuary of St. Publius, during which religious readings and the history of the lamp were recited by the clergy.
The silver votive lamp, in the shape of a Carrack of the Order, was then carried in procession to St. Paul’s Church by members of the Maltese Association of the Order.
This year, the oil to be burnt in St. Paul’s Grotto for the forthcoming year was provided by the Parish of St Joseph the Worker in Birkirkara, represented by their parish priest, Fr. Charlon Muscat.
Fr Muscat was the main celebrant in the Holy Mass in St. Paul’s Church, who also presented the oil and lit the votive lamp after the sermon.
After Mass, the votive lamp was again carried in procession to St Paul’s Grotto where it was hung in front of the statue of St Paul. Prayers were then said in the Grotto, in front of the statue.
Further prayers were dedicated to the repose of the soul of our beloved Confrere, Mgr John Azzopardi, at his burial place in the grotto. Mgr John Azzopardi passed away earlier this year.
Light refreshments were served in the gardens of the Wignacourt Museum after the event.
