Mass in memory of the fallen of the Great Siege in 1565

September 7 2018

Solemn High Mass De Requiem in memory of the fallen of the Great Siege in 1565, was celebrated at  St John’s Co-Cathedral in Valletta at 8.30 a.m. by Mgr Lawrence Gatt, Principal Chaplain Grand Cross ad honorem, assisted by other member of the Reverend Clergy.

At the end of Mass, prayers of remembrance were offered for the repose of the souls of those Knights who had lost their lives in defence of Christianity.

This year, due to restoration works at the Memorial Graveyard to the side of the church, the President, Marchesino Daniel de Petri Testaferrata laid a wreath on the stairs of the Main altar instead.

The members of the Order followed by the Reverend Clergy, processed inside the Co-Cathedral for the blessing of the sepulchral slab of one of the great heroes of the Great Siege, Fra’ Don Melchior de Robles, which is situated in the Chapel of the Langue of Auvergne. Prayers were offered for the repose of his soul, before again processing for the blessing and a memorial prayer at the tomb of Grand Master Jean Parisot de Valette.
