Blessed Gerard Residence for Single Mother Migrants

The Maltese Association’s peripheral organisation, the Maltese Cross Corps, have commenced redecoration works intended to convert their premises at Gwardamangia into a shelter for single mother migrants.
On the suggestion of the Hospitaller, who represents the Maltese Association on the Maltese Cross Corps’ Executive Committee, when completed the premises will most appropriately be christened the “Blessed Gerard Residence”. This assumes even more relevance this year, which marks the 900th anniversary of Blessed Gerard’s death.
The shelter will allow for 3 single mother migrants and their minor children to be accommodated in individual units, comprising a large bedroom and an ensuite bathroom each accessible through a small entrance hall; together with a common kitchen containing individual appliances, a common dining area, a common lounge and a common play area for the children.
Residents will be referred to the shelter by the Emigrants’ Commission, who will be collaborating with the Maltese Cross Corps in this regard.
This project, which has received the support of the Maltese Association as well as of Malteser Hilfsdienst, is also intended to provide integration support services to the residents.
Works have been entrusted to Mike Farrugia Contractors Ltd., under the supervision of Mr. Stefan Farrugia, being the same contractors who undertook the extensive works carried out at the Shelter for Homeless Youth.
The shelter is scheduled to be completed by July this year.
