The young persons offenders unit was moved from the Corradino Correctional Facility to Mtahleb
A group of prison ministry members visited the new premises in Mtahleb and were shown around the facility by the prison authorities. They met the young inmates who very happily seemed to be settling down in this new environment which has more light and fresh air. Some of the young offenders are even keen to help in the cooking, whilst others showed an interest in gardening and art. The authorities are currently working on a new rehabilitation program which will promote positive behaviour change in the young offender in custody, whilst also preparing the young person for eventual integration in the community.
[su_quote cite=”One of our Prison Ministry members experience…”]As I stepped inside the front door, bright light illuminated my way stemming from a large courtyard, the usual sad faced Major immediately greeted us with a smile from eye to eye. Workers and visitors alike seemed happy. And then of course we were welcomed by Joanna who also had a big smile in store to share. I simply thought we entered the wrong place. Definitely it didn’t look or feel like a prison to me at all. Happiness was all over the place, I am fond of whoever came up with this idea of shifting the YOURS to this area. I thought it was wonderful to see some boys actively helping out in the kitchen preparing food and others laying tables.
I was so pleased to note a healthy 2 week menu stuck on the wall, I observed how proud and boastful the chef was about it, while he insisted it was approved by the doctor. A well organised dining mess decorated with nicely prepared healthy food. What a difference…..a far cry from the Paola prisons.
I got inspired, and I want to contribute towards the improvement of the lives of our boys at YOURS.[/su_quote]
