Fundraising lunch for Order of Malta hospitaller works

On Sunday 7th December, the Order of Malta Volunteer in Gozo organised a fundraising lunch at Ta’ Frenc Restaurant in Gozo. The activity was well attended and special guests included Members and volunteers from Malta who crossed over to Gozo for this special occasion. The Director of the Order of Malta Volunteer in Gozo thanked all those who attended as well as the Order of Malta Volunteer in Gozo members especially Manolita Farrugia and Clementine Aveta who did their utmost and worked hard for the success of this activity.

Feast of Blessed Charles of Austria

The Order of Malta Volunteers in Gozo led by the President and the Director, participated during the Mass commemorating Blessed Charles of Austria who was also Bailiff Grand Cross of Honour and Devotion of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta. The Mass was held at the Collegiate Basilica of Gharb and it was celebrated by the Archpriest of the Parish Canon Joseph Sultana.

Medical supplies for Cuban mission and gifts for Russian orphans

For the second time, Order of Malta Volunteer in Gozo has donated a box with medical supplies to be airlifted to Cuba. The donation was presented to Rev Paul Buttigieg from Marsa, Malta who is currently serving in Cuba.

The medicine donated includes aspirins and first aid material and will be utilized at the local clinic where the priest is serving. This one of the most recent donations for missions abroad. Two weeks ago another donation of woolen scarves and baby items was also delivered to Tula in Russia to be used at an orphanage for children.

Participation in Volunteers of the Order Fundraising

On 2nd November, Chris Galea, Director and Manolita Farrugia, Treasurer of the Order of Malta Volunteers in Gozo attended the fundraising lunch organised by Volunteers of the Order in Malta. The fundraising lunch was organised at Villa Arrigo.

The Order of Malta Volunteers, which also assists in various projects of the Order, wants to strengthen the collaboration between all aid organisations of the Order of Malta.

Visit to home for the elderly

The Order of Malta Volunteer in Gozo visited another home for the elderly in Gozo. They visited Trionfi Home which is situated in Victoria on the main road leading to Ta’ Pinu Shrine.

The Domenicans who run this home, greeted them warmly and were happy that a nice group of six volunteers were visiting the elderly persons under their care. The volunteers spent over an hour talking with the elderly and during the visit, oranges and gifts which included soap and woolen scarves were presented. The scarves donated were part of a large amount of scarves and blankets which was donated recently to the Order of Malta Volunteer in Gozo by a benefactor. The visit ended with a prayer by Fr Geoffrey Attard the spiritual director who accompanied the relief corps.

Visit to the St Therese Home for the Elderly

On Saturday 20th September, the Gozo Volunteers also visited the elderly residents at St Therese Home in Victoria, Gozo. Run by the Carmelite nuns, this residence for the elderly is situated up the road which leads to the Knights’ Citadel. The relief corps distributed cake and gifts to the elderly women residing in this home. The Carmelite nuns thanked the Order of Malta Volunteers in Gozo for the visit and also augured for more cooperation in the future.

Organ Donors Campaign during the Charity Fair

The Order of Malta organised another Organ Donors Campaign during the Charity Fair organised by the Friends of the Sick and Elderly in Gozo at the Victoria Football Ground. Confrere George Farrugia from the Western Association also helped the Gozo Volunteers on the Order of Malta stand. Every time a campaign is organised, new people enroll as organ donors.

Supplies for asylum seekers

Last week, the Order of Malta Volunteers in Gozo started another project for the benefit of the asylum seekers residing in Gozo. The donation from the Friends of Gozo has to be utilized for the benefit of these immigrants. Currently the Order of Malta is supplying sanitary items; the first batch of supplies were purchased from a store at a cheap price.

Currently, the Order of Malta Volunteer in Gozo is also analyzing how to respond in winter when refugee camps have a shortage of blankets. The Order of Malta in Gozo will also seek logistical assistance if Christian refugees from Syria and Iraq are hosted in the Maltese Islands.

Accessible transport for patients

During the past few months, the Order of Malta Volunteer in Gozo has continued to provide a special transport service for wheelchair cases and patients who needed assistance in Gozo. Transports varied from residences to medical institutions, outpatient transport to hospital, outings for elderly persons from homes and pilgrimages to Our Lady of Ta’ Pinu and religious feasts. A family of a sick person also benefited from this service every day. St Dominic’s Home for the elderly, Nadur Day Centre, Carmelite Home, Catholic Action widows of Victoria and St Martha Center for the Disabled were regular users of this important service.

We augur that this special ambulance service provided by the Order of Malta, continues to run for the benefit of the community.

Visit to St Dominic’s Home for the Elderly

The Gozo Volunteers visited the elderly residing at the Domenican Home in Victoria, Gozo. The residents were presented with orange juices and biscuits and they were very happy to see the volunteers as the Order of Malta Volunteers in Gozo visits them regularly on a rotating basis. The Order of Malta taillift minibus takes the elderly from this home for outings regularly, therefore the Order of Malta is familiar with them. Mr Radu Georgev, one of the Gozo volunteers also organises therapy sessions at the home while another volunteer Mr Paul Muscat had a work experience there. Sister Cecilia accompanied them during the visit.

During this hospitaller activity, Mr Francisco Carrellan from Andalusia, Spain was presented with a certificate by the Director of the Order of Malta Volunteers in Gozo. Mr Carrellan volunteered in several events organised by the Order of Malta Volunteers in Gozo during his monthly stay in Gozo. He assisted the Order of Malta Volunteers in Gozo during Organ Donors campaigns, Transports by minibus and elderly visits.
