Ta’ Pinu Annual Pilgrimage

The Order of Malta organised its annual Pilgrimage to ta’ Pinu. It was attended by residents of various elderly homes and hospitals, including St Vincent de Paule, Gozo General Hospital, St Dominic’s Home and Dar l-Arka. Mass was celebrated by Bishop Mario Grech Conventual Chaplain Grand Cross, Mgr Lawrence Gatt Principal Chaplain Grand Cross, Rev George Vella, Rev Richard Farrugia and Rev Gerard Buhagiar. The Laudate Pueri Choir led by Rev George Frendo sang during Mass. Minister for Gozo Dr Anton Refalo, the Parliamentary Secretary for the Elderly and Disabled Dr Justyne Caruana and Ex-minister for Gozo Anton Tabone also attended for this Mass.

Gozo Delegation with Grand Master

The representatives of the Order of Malta corps in Gozo attended for the special functions organised for the State Visit of HMEH the Prince and Grand Master Fra` Matthew Festing. Some volunteers also attended the Pontifical Mass at St John’s Co-Cathedral.

On Friday 17th April, the members also attended for the reception at the Embassy of the Order in Valletta. During this activity, HMEH the Grand Master met the volunteers led by the President and the Director. A gift consisting of a set of Gozitan hand-made silk lace was presented to Fra`Matthew Festing.

St Joseph the Worker Day Pilgrimage in Qala

On the feast of St Joseph the Worker, elderly residents from St Dominic’s Home, were taken for a Pilgrimage to the National Shrine of St Joseph in Qala. The elderly residents, some of them in wheelchairs could travel in the Order of Malta accessible minibus while other walking persons could also travel in another car provided. After attending Mass, the pilgrims were provided with coffees and drinks which were provided by the Catholic Action of Gozo.

Visit to Trionfi Home for the Elderly

On Saturday, the Gozo Volunteers visited the elderly residents at Trionfi Home in Victoria, Gozo. This home is run by the Domenican Nuns and caters for female persons. Seven volunteers attended for this important hospitaller activity and they presented religious gifts and oranges to each resident. The Domenican Nuns thanked the Order of Malta for this regular visit.

Presentation of Certificates for Voluntary Work

During the March meeting organised at the Order of Malta office in Victoria, a presentation of certificates was held. Those volunteers of the Order of Malta in Gozo who distinguished themselves in the hospitaller works of the Order of Malta Volunteers in Gozo were all given a certificate signed by the Order of Malta Volunteer in Gozo President and Director as a token for the services provided.

The President, Dr John B Pace who presented the certificates to each volunteer, thanked the members for their constant support. Apart from the current services and visits to the elderly, the Order of Malta Volunteer in Gozo will soon organize another collection of food supplies for needy families. The activity FOOD SUPPLIES WANTED will kick off next week. The meeting ended with a prayer from Order of Malta Volunteer in Gozo Spiritual Director Fr Geoffrey G Attard.

Members attend for opening of the diocesan cause of Beatification of Fra` Andrew Bertie

Two members Clementine Aveta and Manolita Farrugia led by Director Chris Galea also attended for the Opening of the Cause of Beatification and Canonisation of the Servant of God Fra` Andrew Bertie. Comm Joe D’Amato also joined the group for this Holy Pilgrimage. The group from Malta was lodged at the Domus Internationalis Paulus VI thanks to logistical help from Mgr Paul Vella, Conventual Chaplain of the Order of Malta.

Visit to St Therese home for the elderly

On Saturday, the monthly visit to Our Lords the Sick was held at St Therese Home for the Elderly. This Home is run by the Carmelite Nuns and it is near the Citadel in Victoria.

 

The Order of Malta Volunteer in Gozo presented the elderly residents with gifts including scarves and orange juice. The volunteer corps spent over an hour with the elderly and discussed several things of interest. The visit to the elderly ended with a prayer by Fr Geoffrey G. Attard.

Director of the Order of Malta Volunteers in Gozo makes Promise of Obedience

Chris Galea, the Director of the Order of Malta Volunteers in Gozo made the Promise of Obedience in front of the Superiors of the Maltese Association. This Investiture was approved by HMEH the Grand Master. It was held at the Oratory of St John’s Co-Cathedral, Valletta and it was led by Mgr Lawrence Gatt Principal Chaplain, President Philip Farrugia Randon and Chancellor Daniel de Petri Testaferrata.

Members of the Second Class engage themselves to a deeper commitment through the Promise of Obedience. This Promise made to God, concerns all aspects of the spiritual life and activities in the Order of Malta, following the example of Christ who lived in permanent obedience to his Heavenly Father.

Furniture donation

The Order of Malta continued to assist needy families on the island of Gozo thanks to the collaboration of several members of the Order in Malta and in Gozo.

Several persons also donated material and furniture in good condition so that needy families would benefit. One particular family which received a bedroom donated to the Order of Malta Volunteer in Gozo, received other assistance from the relief aid corps after the roof of the house where they live collapsed after bad weather.

Distribution of Relief Aid and clothes in Ghana

Last December, a large quantity of good-quality clothes collected by our volunteers and Ghanaian residents in Gozo, was distributed in Ghana.

Mr Ali Altipaga who was carrying out this relief operation on behalf of the Order of Malta Volunteer in Gozo, returned back from Ghana last week and has given us a report and photos of the assistance he gave in one of the poorest region of the country. The goods collected in Gozo were shipped over to Accra in November, 2014 and after customs clearance, the cargo was transferred by truck to Paga. In this town, the Chief of the area greeted Mr Altipaga in front of one of the Christian churches. The clothes, bedsheets and blankets were distributed to the poor people who assembled outside. One could also notice the joy of the children as one should note that they liked the jeanswear that the Gozitan and Maltese people sent.
