Installment of new Xewkija Archpriest Fr Daniel Xerri

Fr Daniel Xerri from Xaghra, Gozo was installed as new Xewkija Archpriest on 8th November, 2015.

A delegation of Knights and volunteers from Gozo attended for the special Mass celebrated by the Bishop of Gozo and many priests. St John’s Rotunda is the Spiritual Seat of the Order in Gozo.

On 11th November the delegation also met the Archpriest in the Parish Centre and presented him with a gift. A similar gift was also presented to the previous Archpriest Mgr Carmelo Mercieca who thanked the Order for its support to the Parish.

Commemorating Blessed Charles of Austria

The Order of Malta volunteers led by the Director of the corps were invited to attend for the Mass organised by the Blessed Charles League of Prayer among Nations.

Mass was held at Xaghra Basilica and it was celebrated by Mgr Carmelo Refalo. The volunteer corps of the Order in Gozo thanked Mr Dennis Mifsud who organised the function. The saintly Emperor was also a Grand Cross of the Order of Malta and was widely respected for working for peace during the First World War. He died in exile in Madeira.

Collections of clothes and relief supplies for African missions

Recently, the Order of Malta in collaboration with the Xaghra Local Council (Gozo), organized a collection of good-quality clothes, toys and material for several Ghanaian missions. Shipments of containers full of relief aid supplies from Malta and Gozo are leaving for Ghana every three months with the respective missions sharing the cost of the container shipment. Ms Manolita Farrugia coordinated the collection in Xaghra. The Director thanked the Mayor, the Council and all the people who contributed generously.

Meanwhile on 19th October, the Archpriest of the Parish of Qala Gozo) together with our collaborator Dr Raymond C. Xerri organized another big collection of material for the same missions. More than five truckloads of supplies were collected. This is an ongoing project headed by the Order of Malta and in the near future a special meeting will be held to see how the logistical efforts are improved.

Anglican Community in Gozo assists in Order of Malta relief aid

The Anglican Community in Gozo has contributed once again to the needy families and refugees in Gozo. For this year’s Harvest Festival, the community asked its members to contribute food supplies for the relief aid operations conducted by the Order of Malta. After Wednesday Service at the Seminary chapel in Victoria, Ms Carole McLaren, the Church Warden presented the supplies to Chris Galea from the Order of Malta Volunteers in Gozo. Other items donated regularly included clothing, shoes and educational material.

Chris Galea thanked the Anglican Community in Gozo for their continuous assistance for the past three years. He also saluted Ms Carole McLaren who will soon leave back to England. The Order of Malta in Gozo is currently assisting several needy families of different creed and from different countries.

Friends of Gozo present donation for Order of Malta ambulance bus

On behalf of the Friends of Gozo, who three weeks organised a fundraising dinner, Ms Genevieve De Wynter presented a nice donation to the Order of Malta Volunteers in Gozo. The presentation was held at an outlet in the vicinity of the Order of Malta office in Victoria, Gozo.
 
The donation will be instrumental to help the Gozo Volunteers to continue providing a special wheelchair ambulance transport in Gozo. The Order of Malta has been providing this service for the past five years and users have increased on a daily basis. Ms De Wynter presented the money to Ms Manolita Farrugia Treasurer of the OMVG in the presence of Chris Galea Director of the aid organisation in Gozo. The Order of Malta thanked all its benefactors and well-wishers and augured all a Happy Feast on Victory Day; this year commemorating also the 450th Anniversary of the Great Siege of Malta.

Voluntary Experience

Two medical students from Britain carried out voluntary work with the Order of Malta Volunteers in Gozo. Oliver Brown and Oliver Lyle had applied with this aid organisation to carry out voluntary work in Gozo. For nearly two weeks, the two young British men worked with the elderly at St. Dominic’s Home and also helped in the transport service of the Order. Exhibition at the Gozo National Library

An Exhibition at the National Library (Gozo) focuses on the 450th Anniversary of the Great Siege of Malta. Documents and books published about the Siege are exhibited. There is also a section about the Hospitaller works of the Order of Malta.

Mass for Our Lords the Sick at St George’s Basilica

On Thursday 9th July, a special Mass was held for Our Lords the Sick at St George’s Basilica. The Order of Malta Volunteers in Gozo was invited to assist the elderly.

The Order of Malta tail-lift transport was needed to convey the patients from hospital and from St Domenic Home, while the volunteers assisted the guests on wheelchairs. The President and the Director of the Corps in Gozo were also present.

Lecture about the Order

On Saturday 27th June, Chris Galea Director of the volunteer corps, delivered a lecture to the public at the National Library (Gozo). The lecture was part of the activities being organised by the National Library to commemorate the 450th Anniversary of the Great Siege of Malta.

The History of the Hospitaller Military Order of St John was well attended by several members of the Order and also other distinguished guests. The President of the corps in Gozo, Dr John B Pace also attended. The lecture covered the one thousand years of history of the Order of Malta and ended with a brief discussion on the hospitaller works of the Order till this day.
