Visit to St Dominic’s Home for the Elderly

The Gozo Volunteers visited the elderly residing at the Domenican Home in Victoria, Gozo. The residents were presented with orange juices and biscuits and they were very happy to see the volunteers as the Order of Malta Volunteers in Gozo visits them regularly on a rotating basis. The Order of Malta taillift minibus takes the elderly from this home for outings regularly, therefore the Order of Malta is familiar with them. Mr Radu Georgev, one of the Gozo volunteers also organises therapy sessions at the home while another volunteer Mr Paul Muscat had a work experience there. Sister Cecilia accompanied them during the visit.

During this hospitaller activity, Mr Francisco Carrellan from Andalusia, Spain was presented with a certificate by the Director of the Order of Malta Volunteers in Gozo. Mr Carrellan volunteered in several events organised by the Order of Malta Volunteers in Gozo during his monthly stay in Gozo. He assisted the Order of Malta Volunteers in Gozo during Organ Donors campaigns, Transports by minibus and elderly visits. Asylum Seekers project benefits from Friends of Gozo event

The Friends of Gozo organised a fundraising dinner for various Gozitan charities including the Order of Malta Volunteers in Gozo.

The event was held at Ta’ Mena and was attended by many people especially foreigners and Gozitans who reside abroad. The Friends of Gozo chose Order of Malta Volunteers in Gozo as they wanted to assist a Gozo-based charity which is helping refugees in Gozo. The other two charities who also benefitted from this event were the Friends of the Sick and Elderly in Gozo and the Gozo Association for the Deaf.

On Friday 22nd August, during the Organ Donors Campaign in Ghajnsielem, Ms Nicola Vassallo representative of the Friends of Gozo presented the donation of € 1,700 to the Order of Malta Volunteers in Gozo. This donation has to go towards the purchasing of supplies including sanitary/hygiene products and spectacles to refugees from various African countries and the instruction of first aid to Ghanaian immigrants who work in the construction industry. There are over three hundred refugees residing in Gozo.

Collection of clothes for Ghanian missions

The Order of Malta Volunteers in Gozo organised a collection of good-quality clothes and other items such as shoes and bedding for the Ghanaian missions led by Ghanaian asylum seekers who are currently residing in Gozo.

All items collected will be shipped in a container to Accra, then the items will be distributed in different villages in the remotest parts of the African country. This is the fourth year that the Order of Malta Volunteers in Gozo is involved in this particular project. Two months ago, another container full of such items was also sent; it has already arrived. This was sponsored by a shipping company and the Ghanaian’s themselves.

Last weekend collection was organised with the collaboration of the Xaghra Local Council which also supplied a truck to help with the operation. An Order of Malta tail lift vehicle was also utilized. We also wish to thank all those persons who assisted us with this mission.

Organ Donors Campaigns organised by the Order of Malta

The Order of Malta Volunteers in Gozo met Mr Alfred Debattista President of the Transplant Support Group (Malta). The Transplants Group was organising an activity for patients/relatives in Gozo to commemorate persons who were donors. Mr Debattista thanked the Order of Malta for offering its services and supporting Transplant Group.

Transplant Support Group is of service and gives support to all persons who are recipients of an organ or tissue or are waiting to be transplanted with an organ.

Currently the Order of Malta Volunteers in Gozo is carrying out campaigns all over Gozo so that individuals would enrol as organ donors in collaboration with the Transplants Support Group. Such activities are being carried out in different parishes with the good coordination of Ms Manolita Farrugia. On Sunday 17th August another activity will be organised in Zebbug, Gozo during a youth activity organised by the parish and Fr Geoffrey G Attard.
