World Sight Day 2017 – Make Vision Count

December 27 2017

A formal presentation of prescription eyeglasses to a number of immigrants took place at the Marsa Open Centre on Wednesday 27th December 2017.

This presentation was the culmination of a project which was coordinated by the Maltese Association on the initiative of Class Optical, with the collaboration of the Agency for the Welfare of Asylum Seekers (AWAS), to mark the occasion.

Attending the presentation on behalf of the Association was the President, Daniel de Petri Testaferrata, who spoke about the importance of migrants to the Order, and who was accompanied by the Hospitaller, Dr. Kevin F. Dingli. Class Optical was represented by its Managing Director Mr. Martin Mercieca, who spoke about the importance of regular eye tests in the health sector, as well as by Ms. Claire Tua, from Administration. AWAS was in turn represented by its Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Joseph Michael Baldacchino.

In the lead up to this presentation, a total number of 40 candidates of varying ages, both male and female, were first selected to benefit from an eye-test. These tests were carried out by Class Optical eye-care practitioners on two separate occasions at the Marsa Open Centre as well as at the Hal Far Open Centre on the 6th and 8th November 2017 respectively, in the very mobile clinic which the Order of Malta had donated to the Government of Malta in December 2016.

Prescriptions were then issued as required to 33 of those examined, following which appropriate optical jobs were created. The patients were invited to select from a range of optical frames which were provided by Class Optical, following which the frames and accompanying prescriptions were sent to the lab for processing, lenses produced and mounted … ready for wear!
